Healthy Lifestyle for Teens and Young Adults

Healthy Lifestyle

Getting physical activity most days is one of the most important things you can do for your health. It can help:

  • Control your weight
  • Strengthen your bones and muscles
  • Improve your mental health and mood
  • Increase your chances of living longer

Fitting exercise into your daily schedule may seem tough at first. But even ten minutes at a time is fine. The key is to find the right activity for you. It should be fun and match your abilities.

Remember to listen to your body. If you are often super tired or are in pain, you may be overdoing it. You could get injured. So be careful. Don’t overdo it.

What you eat and drink is also important. Water is the most important nutrient for active people. Drink water before, during and after workouts. 1-2

Food gives you what you need to be healthy. Proteins, carbohydrates (“carbs”), fats, vitamins, minerals and water are some things that help you eat healthy.

Healthy eating is not tough. The key is to:

  • Eat a wide range of foods, including veggies, fruits and whole-grains
  • Eat chicken, fish, beans and low-fat dairy products
  • Drink lots of water
  • Limit salt, sugar, alcohol, saturated fat and trans fat

Saturated fats are often found in animal meats and some dairy. Trans-fats are often found in processed foods, margarines and shortenings.1
